Inspired by ‘The Wonder of Wonders’, a broadside from 1760 about a Sea Captain who slept through a storm whilst all his crew rowed to safety. It recounts the strange dreams he had of ivory castles and a beautiful woman surrounded by serpents. But when the captain awoke, his waking visions were just as strange: lost at sea on an abandoned ship, he was greeted by a mermaid who leant a compass to guide him home. Back on the shore, Jack wouldn’t return home, but waited for the mermaid to return as promised, to reclaim her compass.
